Don’t wait for the occasion

We often wait for an occasion that seems worthy enough. And sometimes that occasion never comes.

Meanwhile, life is happening.

This is not an argument for dressing extravagantly every day. Clothing has to belong to the life we actually lead.

But perhaps we should question the phrase: “Too nice for everyday.”

Maybe everyday is exactly where beautiful things belong. Wear the jacket to lunch. Wear the dress to go shopping. Wear the silk blouse to meet a friend. Wear the trousers that make you stand differently when you walk. We wait until someone else creates an occasion for us.

The most beautiful clothes should not transform us into somebody else. They should help us inhabit more fully the person we already are.

So the next time we think, “I love it, but where would I wear it?” perhaps we should ask another question: Why not here?

Why not today?

Why not simply because this is our life - and we only get one.

We spend so much time waiting for life to become special, but the truth is that it already is.
